Roaring success for the Welsh drag-on

Article: Roaring success for the Welsh drag-on

Ceri Dupree has been strutting his high-heeled stuff for 25 years around the club, hotel, theatre and corporate circuit, in venues from his native Wales to the Seychelles.

A familiar face with Leicester audiences due to his acclaimed performances at the Haymarket Theatre in hit musicals Rock Hard and Hot Stuff, now the boyo is back in town for a seven-night run at The Y.

It's glamorous, camp fun, but underneath the falsies is an accomplished character actor. This is no mere skin-deep drag act, his female (and sometimes male) impersonations are on a whole different level, an exaggerated characterisation, but with a truth that captures the very essence of the icon he portrays.

He is suppoted by the singing talents of Hannah and Cai, who provide musical introductions to each new presentation.

The legends were all here, Bette Davis, Mae West, Dietrich, Bassey and Streisand.

His Dame Edna is even more caustic than the real thing and Tina Turner is simply the best and his thigh-booted, micro-costumed Cher raised a few questions, while Dame Barbara Cartland was a fine encore.

Slick and saucy, rude and risque, fun and fantastic.

For this Welsh dragon, may the drag go on and on.
